Born on February 15, 1820, Susan Brownwell Anthony would become the most visible leader of the woman’s suffrage movement. A strong strategist, her ability, discipline, and energy would fuel her success. She co-founded the American Equal Rights Association.
In honor of her tireless work to further women’s rights, including the right to vote, President Jimmy Carter signed the Susan B. Anthony Dollar Coin Act. She was the first woman to be honored by her likeness appearing on a circulating U.S. coin.
