It’s the most…..flammable time of the year! You didn’t expect that little change to the common holiday tune did you? Did you know that three times as many house fires occur on Thanksgiving Day as any other day of the year and that Thanksgiving is the leading day of the year for house fires? If you think about it, it makes sense. How many of us rarely cook during the rest of the year……and then plan to become Martha Stewart and prepare a full gourmet holiday spread in one day? With this many out of practice cooks in the kitchen, it’s little wonder that so many fires occur. Compound this with the distraction of family visiting, the hustle to get multiple dishes prepared at once and the overall stress of the holidays and it’s easy to see why Thanksgiving takes the lead as the “kitchen fire holiday of the year”.

To keep your holiday on track, check out these key take aways for keeping your home safe and fire-free this Thanksgiving….and your food ready on time 😉

1-) Set a timer. It sounds simple, but it’s easy to forget. Be sure that you set a timer on each dish that is being prepared. Leaving food on the stove or in the oven too long not only makes for a not-so-tasty charred dish…it’s also a fire hazard. Also, remember that dishes that are high in sugar are faster to burn, so especially keep this in mind when making desserts or high-sugar sides (we’re looking at you cranberry sauce).

2- ) Ask for help. If you have family of friends visiting, ask them for help with the food prep. Make specific people responsible for specific dishes. It’s impossible to keep an eye on everything at once, so delegate! If you are getting brave and plan to tackle a fried turkey this year, be sure to have someone outside watching the burner. Also, make sure that you have a fire extinguisher handy to douse a rouge flame.

3- ) Keep kiddos out of the kitchen. Burns are a very common injury this time of year. In the hustle and bustle kids can touch hot pans or hurt themselves in the kitchen. Let younger children help in other ways such as setting the table, carrying cooking utensils or seasonings inside or outside for various cooking spots, washing the dishes or prepping non-hot foods.

4- ) Keep items clear of burners. It’s easy to get distracted. Be sure to keep oven mitts, towels and other flammable items clear or burners or hot surfaces. Also, be sure to check the ventilation system on your stove before starting your marathon cooking session. If you aren’t a frequent cooker, lint and dust can build up in your range hood and serves as the ideal environment for sparking a grease fire.

5- ) Take precautions. Be sure to have your smoke alarms tested frequently and have the batteries checked. Also, make sure that you have a fire extinguisher handy before you start cooking. Especially for kitchen fires which frequently involve grease, it is essential to have a fire extinguisher available as water can make these fires worse.

6- ) If you have a cooking fire, the National Fire Protection Association recommends that you follow the following steps:

1-) Leave the premises. When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire.

2-) Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number from outside the home.

3-) If you try to fight the fire, be sure others are getting out and you have a clear path out of the home, and that someone has called the fire department.

4-) Keep a lid nearby when cooking to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.

5-) For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.

Enjoy a safe, fun, tasty and fire-free holiday season!
