Wherever your travels are taking you this holiday season, prepping your vehicle for winter weather will keep your holiday travels more merry and bright. Have you ever skipped warming your car up before driving to work or leaving for a trip? Have you ever gritted your teeth in frustration as you spend twenty minutes scraping the ice and snow off your windows before work (which, of course means you are now running late)? Check out these top tips for safe driving this winter season to keep your car running like a champ.

Let it run (and watch that snow melt). It is no secret that taking the time to warm up your car in the morning is probably not on anyone’s top-pick list on a cold, early morning before work. While mechanics commonly state that a few seconds is all it takes to get your engine warmed up, during winter months, allowing your car to run for  few minutes before hitting the road can do wonders for your ice-clearing job! Before heading out to start your day, turn your car on and set the defrost blowers to hot and high for your front and back windows. This allows the snow and ice to soften and does most of the work for you for clearing your windows…..and you have the added perk of a warm car when you head out for the day.

Do a checkup. Whether you are starting out for your holiday road trip, or just heading into the winter season, it’s essential to check the fluids in your car. Keeping your oil clean and filters replaced can extend your engine life and keep your vehicle running optimally. Anti-freeze is also an essential top-off in your vehicle during cold winter months. Anti-freeze helps regulate the temperature in your engine and radiator to prevent summer boil-overs and winter freeze-ups. Just remember, always keep anti-freeze away from kids and pets as both young children and dogs are drawn to the sweet smell and taste of anti-freeze. Automatic transmission fluid, brake fluid and all your other systems should be checked before heading into the winter months. If you are pressed for time or want to skip the mess of checking your auto’s fluids at home, drop by a trusted auto shop and ask for a full check over for your vehicle. Be sure that your tires are in good condition as well and will allow adequate traction for slick or icy roads.

Pack it up. Before heading out for a road trip, be sure that you have stocked your car with emergency essentials. Especially in cold weather, certain items can come in handy in case of a break down or emergency. Consider grabbing the following items and keeping them in a bag in your car.

  • Flashlight & extra batteries
  • Blanket
  • Phone charger
  • Snacks and water bottles
  • Ice scraper
  • Jumper cables
  • Road flares

What about the snow? Just because there is some snow on the ground doesn’t mean you can’t make your trip. Practice safe driving when road conditions are icy or snowy. Remember to leave more room between your car and the car in front of you (if you slide on ice…you’ll be glad for the extra space). Drive more slowly and keep an eye on how the vehicles ahead of you are going. Keep a steady acceleration and deceleration pace and you should be fine. If you are taking a longer trip, consider checking the weather channel before you head out to get a heads up on any stormy conditions.
